Public streaming planning
Outdoor projections are always subject to a wide variety of factors. The time of day (incidence of sunlight and degree of darkness), number of spectators, location, shade, etc. have a significant impact on the planning of an outdoor event.
A few basic rules apply in general:
- No direct sunlight! The sun must never shine directly onto the projection screen.
- The location with the most shade at the time of day must always be selected. Natural shade can be enormously helpful if you want to keep the effort and costs as low as possible.
- The more ANSI lumens the projector has, the better. In our experience, at least 10,000 ANSI lumens are required to project a satisfactory image over a 2 meter image width outdoors.
- The projected image can never be bright enough. Although 20,000 ANSI lumens are physically twice the output of 10,000 ANSI lumens, the subjective increase in output in the viewed image is more likely to be around 10-30% more output.
- Standard lenses have a projection ratio of around 2:1, which means that for every 2 meters of distance between the projector and screen, you get a 1 meter wide projected image. Since you want to keep the distance between projector and screen as small as possible for rear projection, you need wide-angle lenses. That's why we supply the Panasonic ET-D75LE90, this ultra-short distance lens with a ratio of 0.36:1 delivers an image just under 3 meters wide at a distance of 1 meter.
- The size of the screen should be selected according to the distance of the furthest viewer. The last viewer should be a maximum of 7.5 times the width of the screen, e.g. for a 4m (width) x 3m (height) screen, calculate 4m (width) x 7.5 (factor) = 30m (distance to the screen). The last spectator should therefore be a maximum of 30m away.
- There are different screen types with different brightness amplification properties (gain factor). The higher the gain factor, the better the brightness amplification of the screen, but also the greater the risk of hotspots and uneven illumination. If the gain factor is too high, the brightness can be centered to such an extent that only the audience in the center can see a bright image.
- Rear projection is mandatory! The projector shines from behind onto a rear projection screen. The area between the projector and the screen is darkened by a tunnel (tent, molleton, tarpaulin). This tunnel, which leads from the projector to the screen, must be completely opaque and preferably black on the inside. It also protects the projector from the weather.
