Practical tips: how to get outdoor projection right
As little sunlight or ambient light as possible! It may sound obvious, but it’s crucial: the darker the surroundings, the better the projection. The good news: most World Cup matches take place in the evening or at night (at least in European time zones).
Brightness matters: the more ANSI lumens the projector has, the better. From our experience, to project a satisfying image outdoors with a width of 2 metres, you’ll need at least 10,000 ANSI lumens.
Screen size vs. viewing distance: the screen size should be chosen based on the distance of the farthest viewer. The last viewer should be no more than 7.5 times the image width away. For example: with a 4 m (width) × 3 m (height) screen, calculate 4 m × 7.5 = 30 m (viewing distance). So the last viewer should be no more than 30 m away.
Lenses make the difference: ultra‑short‑throw lenses allow large images in small spaces – ideal when setup space is limited. Telephoto lenses are suitable when the projector is positioned far from the screen. The right lens often makes the difference between “okay” and truly impressive.
Rear projection is a must! That way, no one stands between the projector and the screen. Here’s how it works: the projector beams from behind onto a rear‑projection screen. The area in between is darkened with a tunnel (tent, molton fabric, tarpaulin). This tunnel, connecting projector and screen, must be completely light‑tight and ideally black on the inside. It also protects the projector from the weather. And honestly, there’s hardly anything more annoying than someone walking through the picture – this setup prevents exactly that.
