What is an event projector and how does it differ from beamers and other types of projectors?

An event projector is a special type of projector designed for use at events such as theatre performances, conferences, trade fairs, concerts or large corporate events

Compared to other types of projectors, such as home cinema or office projectors, event projectors have some key differences and specific characteristics:

  • Brightness (lumens): Event projectors generally have a significantly higher brightness, often measured in thousands of lumens. This is necessary to produce clear and bright images in large rooms or environments with ambient light.
  • Resolution and image quality: They usually offer higher resolution and better image quality to ensure that content remains sharp and detailed even on large screens.
  • Size and robustness: Event projectors are often larger and more robustly built, as they are designed for frequent transport and use in different environments.
  • Connectivity: They feature a wide range of connection options to support a broad variety of video sources.
  • Integration into professional AV systems: Event projectors are often designed to integrate seamlessly into professional audio-visual (AV) systems and include functions for remote control and monitoring.
  • Higher cost: Due to their advanced features and higher performance, event projectors are generally more expensive than other types of projectors.

Technical quality features of our projectors

The selection of a suitable AV projector requires an understanding of certain technical specifications, such as brightness, native resolution or projector technology:

Brightness and light source in event projectors

The brightness of event projectors is measured in ANSI lumens and determines how bright the image appears in different environments. For events with daylight exposure, high brightness is required. Contrast ratios contribute to image quality, especially in dark scenes. Our range includes projectors from 5,000 lumens up to 75,000 lumens with integrated light sources such as laser, LED and lamp-based systems using UHP, UHM or xenon technology.

Native resolution

The projector’s native resolution is another important factor. A higher resolution enables sharper images and more detailed visuals. We offer Full HD projectors, WUXGA and professional 4K models and beyond.

Projection ratio

Many event projectors can display different formats and are universally suitable for various events. The image formats of our projectors range from 4:3 to 16:9, 16:10 and up to 21:9. The built-in technology of event projectors is also crucial for the visual quality of an event. In our shop, you will find 3LCD and DLP projectors.

Lenses for projectors

The quality of the lenses is crucial to optimise the image quality of your projection. High-quality projector lenses allow for precise focusing and zoom control to adjust projection distance and size. Interchangeable lenses provide greater flexibility and different projection factors. In our shop you will find various lenses suitable for every application:

When it comes to the visual design of events, the right projectors are essential. Professional users integrate event projectors into complex AV systems. The right accessories for your projector are therefore crucial to improve projection quality and ensure the success of your project.

FAQ – The Most Common Questions About Our Projectors

What features and specifications should be considered when selecting a projector?

Several key features should be considered to ensure the projector meets the specific requirements of your event:

  • Brightness: Essential for clear visibility in bright rooms or daylight conditions. The brighter the environment, the higher the lumen count should be.
  • Resolution: For sharper images, choose a higher resolution that matches the media being displayed (e.g., Full HD, 4K).
  • Contrast ratio: A higher contrast ratio provides deeper blacks and more vivid colors, important for visual quality.
  • Connectivity options: Check compatibility with various input sources such as HDMI, VGA, DVI, USB, or SDI.
  • Lens options: Flexibility for different room sizes with various lenses, as well as zoom, shift, and focus functions.
  • Throw ratio: Important for determining the projector's positioning in the room.
  • Interactive features: Touchscreen support or network integration can be useful for certain events.
  • Portability and setup: Consider the weight and size of the projector for easy transport and installation.
  • Noise level: In quiet environments, choose projectors with a low noise level.
  • Reliability and support: Prefer brands with a good reputation and technical support.
  • Price and total cost of ownership: Consider purchase price along with long-term operational costs like lamp life, maintenance, and energy consumption.

How does projection technology work in projectors, and what are the different technologies used (e.g., DLP, LCD, LCoS)?

Projection technology in video projectors works by directing light through an imaging element and projecting the resulting image onto a surface. The three most common technologies in this regard are DLP (Digital Light Processing), LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), and LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon). Each works in its own way:

DLP (Digital Light Processing):
DLP projectors use a chip covered with thousands of tiny mirrors, with each mirror corresponding to a pixel. Light is projected onto this chip and reflected by the mirrors. Colors are produced either by a spinning color wheel that sequentially passes red, green, and blue light, or by using three separate chips for each primary color. The advantage: DLP generally offers sharper images and better contrast, is compact, and responds quickly, making it ideal for video content.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display):
LCD projectors use liquid crystal panels that light passes through. These panels act as filters, controlling the intensity and color of the transmitted light. Usually, three separate panels are used for the red, green, and blue components of the image. LCD can produce brighter images and better color saturation, is generally more energy-efficient, and offers good color accuracy.

LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon):
Liquid Crystal on Silicon combines elements of LCD and DLP technologies. Here, liquid crystals are applied to a reflective silicon chip. Similar to LCDs with separate panels for each color, the light is reflected rather than transmitted. LCoS projectors deliver very high-resolution images with excellent detail and color accuracy, often providing the best black levels and contrast.

How do I choose the right resolution for a video projector based on the content requirements?

Choosing the right resolution for a video projector depends on several factors, especially the content and intended use. Consider the following:

  • Text and detailed graphics: For presentations with a lot of text or detailed graphics, higher resolution is important to ensure readability and clarity. At least Full HD (1920 x 1080) is recommended.
  • Videos and movies: For displaying videos and movies, a variety of resolutions may be suitable. Full HD provides a good balance between quality and cost, while 4K (3840 x 2160) is ideal for a premium cinematic experience.
  • Simple graphics and images: For simple graphics or images, lower resolutions like 720p (1280 x 720) may be sufficient.
  • Screen size: The larger the screen, the higher the resolution should be to ensure good image quality. Lower resolutions will appear pixelated on large screens.
  • Viewing distance: The audience's distance from the screen plays a role. The closer the viewing distance, the higher the resolution needed for a clear image.
  • Available media quality: Consider the resolution of the media you’ll be using. It makes little sense to choose a 4K projector if your content is only available in lower resolution.

Can an event projector be used outdoors, and what brightness requirements are relevant for different venues?

Using an event projector outdoors is possible, but outdoor setups require protection from weather elements such as rain, wind, and dust. Special enclosures or shelters may be needed. Regarding brightness and environmental conditions, consider the following:

  • Outdoors during daylight: For outdoor events in daylight, projectors with very high brightness are required. Typically, at least 10,000 lumens are necessary, but for large screens or locations with direct sunlight, 20,000 lumens or more may be required. However, even the brightest projectors cannot compete with direct sunlight.
  • Outdoors at dusk or night: In lower light conditions, brightness requirements may be lower, but at least 5,000 lumens are recommended to compete with ambient light.
  • Indoors: In indoor environments, brightness needs vary depending on room size and lighting. For small to medium-sized rooms, 3,000 to 5,000 lumens are often sufficient, while large halls may require 10,000 lumens or more.

Are there any specific environmental conditions that should be considered when installing projectors (e.g., room lighting, room size)?

When installing projectors, consider the following environmental conditions:

  • Room lighting: Consider both natural and artificial light. High brightness (lumens) is essential for clear images in well-lit rooms. The ability to darken the room, such as with curtains, improves image quality.
  • Projection surface, room size, and layout: The quality of the screen or wall color impacts the image quality. Room acoustics are also important for audio quality. Consider the projection distance and projector placement to avoid distortion and ensure visibility for the audience.
  • Airflow and temperature: Ensure good ventilation for the projector and avoid extreme temperatures to prevent overheating. In dusty or smoky environments, particles can accumulate, affecting image quality and damaging the projector.
  • Vibration and noise sources: Avoid locations with significant vibrations or noise to maintain image stability and enhance the audio experience.

How can I optimize the lifespan of my projector through maintenance?

The optimization of lifespan and reliability through regular maintenance of event projectors cannot be emphasized enough. Maintenance includes cleaning the ventilation slots, airways, optical components, replacing filters, and monitoring all performance parameters of the projector, including lamp hours. Firmware updates should also not be neglected to receive the latest features and bug fixes.

How can I ensure that my projector works reliably during an event?

Regular maintenance is immensely helpful here. Comprehensive tests should be carried out before the event, including checking signal sources, calibrating colors, and adjusting the projection optics. A redundant system with backup projectors and spare lamps can also increase reliability. Do you have further questions about your project?
